Why does running an SME feel so lonely?

Running an SME can feel incredibly lonely at times.  Normally, when things are going well you feel almost invincible, but if and when things aren’t going so well, the weight of decision-making responsibility alongside the impact of risk-taking can make you feel incredibly isolated.  It’s important to prioritise self-care, maintain a work-life balance, and seek support when needed. Building a strong support system can help alleviate the feelings of loneliness and provide the guidance and encouragement necessary to navigate the challenges of running an SME.

Running a small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) can feel incredibly lonely at times – especially if you’re someone who’s used to working in a bigger company.  It’s hard not to have a boss kicking your butt out of bed every morning and keeping tabs on what you’ve done and what you haven’t done.  No matter how much you dreamed about being self-employed, it can be hard. Here are just some of the reasons why running a small business can be a lonely place:

1. Decision-Making Responsibility: As the owner or manager of an SME, the ultimate responsibility for making important decisions rests on your shoulders. This can create a sense of isolation and loneliness as you bear the weight of the outcomes and consequences of those decisions.

2. Lack of Peer Support: Unlike larger organisations with extensive management teams, SMEs often have limited personnel, making it nigh on impossible to have peers or colleagues share your burden and provide support. This lack of immediate peer support can contribute to a feeling of isolation.

3. Limited Resources: SMEs often face resource constraints, including financial limitations, a lean workforce, and limited access to specialised expertise – there’s no more “getting Jane in marketing to deal with that”. With fewer resources, you may find yourself shouldering multiple responsibilities and working long hours, leading to a sense of isolation and fatigue.

4. High Stakes and Pressure: Running an SME can involve significant risks and pressures. The success or failure of the business may have a direct impact on your livelihood and personal finances. This heightened level of pressure can create a sense of isolation as you bear the weight of those responsibilities.

5. Limited Networking Opportunities: SME owners and managers may find it challenging to connect with others in similar roles due to time constraints and the nature of their work. This limited networking opportunity can lead to a sense of isolation, as there may be fewer opportunities to share experiences, seek advice, or find a support network.

While the feeling of loneliness can be significant common among SME owners, it’s essential to remember that you are not alone in facing these challenges. There are resources and support available to help you navigate the journey.  Here are a few ideas to help you:

1. Seek Professional Networks: Look for industry-specific organisations, business associations, or networking groups where you can connect with fellow SME owners and managers. These networks can provide a platform to share experiences, seek advice, and build a support system.

2. Consider Mentorship or Coaching: Engaging with a mentor or business coach can provide guidance, perspective, and emotional support. They can offer insights based on their own experiences and help you overcome challenges.

3. Join Online Communities: Participating in online forums, social media groups, or LinkedIn groups focused on SMEs can be a life-saver. It’s a great way to engage in discussions, ask questions, and share your experiences – without having to travel long distances or invest much time. Connecting with like-minded individuals in similar situations can help combat feelings of loneliness.

4. Attend Events and Workshops: Attend industry conferences, workshops, or seminars to expand your network and learn from experts. These events provide opportunities to connect with peers, gain knowledge, and find potential mentors or collaborators.

5. Seek Support from Family and Friends: While you won’t want to be a burden, you can lean on your personal support network, such as family and friends, for emotional support. They can offer a listening ear, provide encouragement, and remind you that you’re not alone in your journey.

Remember that it’s essential to prioritise self-care, maintain a work-life balance, and seek support when needed. Building a strong support system can help alleviate the feelings of loneliness and provide the guidance and encouragement necessary to navigate the challenges of running an SME.

Just remember – you’re not alone – even if it sometimes feels as if you are.
