As an SME owner, what could I outsource?

Outsourcing can be a really smart solution for SME owners.  As a small business owner, you can’t always justify hiring someone but you need support.  This is where outsourcing comes into its own.  Lots of SME owners outsource their accounts, IT, HR, marketing, logistics, customer support and website work. Working this way potentially gives rise to cost savings, efficiencies and access to specialist skills, but it’s important to do your homework before you commit.

As an SME (Small and Medium-sized Enterprise) owner, there are several functions or tasks that you could consider outsourcing to external service providers to make your business more efficient or even to save money. The specific areas of your business that you decide to outsource will depend on your business needs and priorities. Here are some common functions that SMEs often choose to outsource:

 1. Accounting and Bookkeeping: Outsourcing your accounting and bookkeeping tasks can help ensure accurate financial records, timely tax compliance, and efficient financial management. External accounting firms or bookkeepers can handle tasks such as payroll processing, accounts payable and receivable, financial reporting, and tax preparation.

2. IT Services: Many SMEs choose to outsource their IT services to specialised providers. This can include tasks such as network setup and maintenance, software development, database management, cybersecurity, helpdesk support, and infrastructure management. Outsourcing IT services allows you to access technical expertise, stay updated with the latest technology trends, and reduce the burden of managing complex IT systems in-house.

3. Marketing and Advertising: Outsourcing marketing and advertising functions can help you access specialised skills and industry knowledge. This can include tasks such as social media management, search engine optimisation (SEO), content creation, graphic design, online advertising campaigns, and market research. External marketing agencies or freelancers can help you develop effective marketing strategies and campaigns tailored to your target audience.

4. Customer Support: Outsourcing customer support functions, such as call centre services or helpdesk support, can ensure that your customers receive prompt and professional assistance. Service providers can handle customer enquiries, technical support, order processing, and complaint resolution, allowing you to focus on core business activities.

5. Human Resources (HR) Functions: SMEs can outsource certain HR functions to external providers. This can include payroll administration, recruitment, employee benefits management, training and development, and HR compliance. Outsourcing HR functions can help ensure compliance with employment law, access HR expertise, and streamline administrative tasks.

6. Website Development and Maintenance: If you require a professional website, outsourcing website development and maintenance can be a cost-effective option. Web development agencies or freelancers can create and manage your website, ensuring it is visually appealing, functional, and optimised for search engines.

7. Logistics and Supply Chain: If your business involves product distribution, you can outsource logistics and supply chain management. This can include inventory management, order fulfillment, warehousing, transportation, and distribution. External logistics providers can help optimise your supply chain, reduce costs, and improve efficiency.

It’s important to evaluate the potential benefits and risks of outsourcing each function before making a decision. Consider factors such as cost savings, expertise required, the criticality of the function to your business, and the reputation and reliability of potential service providers. It’s also important to, maintain clear communication and establish service level agreements (SLAs) to ensure expectations are met.

Could your business potentially benefit from outsourcing one or more of these things?
