How can I identify my WHY as a business owner

Taking time out to rediscover your WHY is a valuable business journey, albeit it may require time, reflection, and experimentation. Be open to exploring new paths, adjusting your strategies, and seeking support from mentors, peers, or coaches to re-kindle your flame. By reconnecting with your purpose, you can regain the passion and motivation that will drive your business forward.

Losing your sense of purpose or “why” in your business is not uncommon and can happen for various reasons.  It’s tough to be working alone, to always have the buck stopping with you.  When things are going well you feel (pretty much invincible) but when things are going less well, it can be seriously hard.  Re-visiting your WHY is a great way to get back on track. Here are some things you can focus on to rediscover your why:

1. Reflect on your initial motivation: Recall what initially inspired you to start your business. Think about the passion, goals, and aspirations that led you on this entrepreneurial journey. Reflecting on your original motivation can help you reconnect with your why and reignite your sense of purpose.

2. Revisit your values: Consider the values that are important to you personally and as a business owner. Reflect on the principles and beliefs that guide your decisions and actions. Aligning your business with your core values can bring a real sense of meaning and fulfilment.

3. Reconnect with your clients/customers: Take the time to reconnect with your clients/customers and understand their needs, challenges, and aspirations. Engage in conversations, or seek feedback to gain insights into how your business can make, or is already making a positive impact on their lives. Focusing on the value you provide to your clients/customers can reignite your sense of purpose.

4. Assess your impact: Reflect on the impact your business has had on individuals, the community, or your industry. Consider the positive outcomes, successes, or transformations that your products or services have brought about. Recognising the difference you’ve made can help rekindle your passion and remind you of the purpose behind your business.

5. Seek inspiration from others: Look for inspiration from successful entrepreneurs, thought leaders, or mentors. Read books, listen to podcasts, or attend industry events that feature stories of business owners who have overcome challenges and found renewed purpose. Their experiences and insights may offer inspiration as you navigate your own journey.

6. Explore new avenues and innovations: Consider exploring new opportunities, innovations, or ways to evolve your business. Sometimes, the lack of motivation stems from feeling stagnant or stuck. Embracing new ideas, strategies, or ventures can reignite your passion and drive, opening up fresh possibilities for your business.

7. Take care of yourself: It’s important to take care of your own well-being and recharge your batteries. Prioritise self-care activities that help you relax, rejuvenate, and gain clarity. This may include exercise, spending time in nature, practicing mindfulness, or engaging in hobbies that bring you joy. When you take care of yourself, you’ll be better equipped to rediscover your why and find renewed inspiration.

Remember that rediscovering your why is a journey, and it may require time, reflection, and experimentation. Be open to exploring new paths, adjusting your strategies, and seeking support from mentors, peers, or coaches. By reconnecting with your purpose, you can regain the passion and motivation that will drive your business forward.
